Water Tender: A Memoir in Poems (Fithian Press, 2003) consists of 56 free-verse poems by poet, Mary Agnes Dalrymple

Book Description

Water Tender, arranged chronologically, tells the story of the poet's life.  Along the way, the poet visits dark and disturbing moments, like her mother's death in an automobile accident, her husband's stroke, and the unexpected death of a sister's husband.

But this collection also contains moments of beauty and hope, like the fleeting dance of a monarch butterfly in the poet's garden, or her husband riding into heart surgery wearing a blue paper hat.

The second part of this book consists of a series of gemlike poetic narratives inspired by newspaper articles, photographs, and other found sources.  In these poems, the poet speaks through other voices, connecting her life to the lives of others.

The poems of Water Tender want to salvage the details of life, as the present slips, like water, into the past.
